I have decided for my teaser trailer of a film to be on the genre of drama (or at least the sub-genre of drama) so have therefore decided to do some research on Drama films, looking at what themes they are usually based on, etc…to get an idea of what I am going to do for my film’s teaser trailer. I have also been watching trailers for films at www.cineworld.co.uk but will soon YouTube ‘teaser trailers’ as our task is to create a teaser trailer, not a main trailer. I will do this so that I can see roughly how much detail, etc…are in them
Drama films usually depend on realistic characters dealing with emotions and emotional themes (like TV soaps) so my film will involve a plot that challenges characters’ emotions.
What ‘regulation’ means:
Regulation is the act of controlling behaviour, of societies or people by rules or restrictions. Everything in life has regulations, rules and laws are expected to be followed every day (eg: Don’t murder people)
What the BBFC does:
The British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC) regulates what films can be seen by certain people (eg: under 18’s will not be allowed to see an ‘18′ certificate film). All countries have their own ways of regulating films, some involve censoring (cutting down footage) or certification (eg: 15) and some use both methods. There is concern that films may impact individuals and society in a negative way, which is why the BBFC, MPAA, and other film regulators give films certificates. These concerns are mostly related to Sex, Violence, Swearing, Drug Use, Cruelty (in the making of the film) and Politics.
What the MPAA does:
The Motion Picture Association Of America (MPAA), like the BBFC, regulate what films can be seen by certain people (eg: R needs people under 17 to be accompanied by an adult over 21 in order to see the film)and they can recommend the cutting of films to raise or lower the rating of films. The MPAA also enforce copyright protection and criminal law.
What an auteur is:
Auteur is a French word which means author. The auteur of a film is usually seen as a famous director (with a body of work that can be analysed- eg: Tim Burton) although for most films this cannot be accurate as although auteur directors have unique visions for films, a film combines ideas/influences from other people working on the film (Directors are not the only people involved in the film- it is a collaborative medium)
Why Alfred Hitchcock can be considered an auteur:
Alfred Hitchcock can be considered an auteur because he was a very famous director with a large body of work (which can be studied/analysed), featuring unique styles and themes. He directed over 60 films including “Dial M For Murder”, “Vertigo”, “The Birds”, “Rear Window”, “Physco”, etc… Also film auteurs tend to have a favourite or favourite actors that they often work with again and again in their films (eg: director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp)- for Hitchcock, he often worked with…
A teaser trailer in film is a short trailer (advert) which is used to advertise upcoming (to be released) films. Teaser trailers are the first advert for a film while longer main trailers with more detail are released later. They sometimes are released over a year before the film is released (eg: a teaser trailer for “The Incredibles” was released on the “Finding Nemo” DVD- ”The Incredibles” came out 18 months later). Sometimes teaser trailers will feature scenes or alternate versions of scenes that do not appear in the finished film (eg: Pixar). Teaser Trailers are very short, usually lasting between 30 and 60 seconds. They tend to include the title of the film, the main actors and an extremely short bit of the film.
