Digital Technology: How have your skills developed over the course?

March 29th, 2010

My skills relating to digital technology have developed over the time of my Media Studies course, which is split into 2 years, the 1st being AS and the 2nd being A2 which come together to make an A Level. In the 1st year of this course (AS), I learnt a few more features of Microsoft Publisher but hardly anything as I had already used the program in my GCSE’s for creating a CD cover but learnt a few new things in AS, relating to useful features for creating magazines. I then used that knowledge from GCSE and AS for my A2 coursework, as the task for AS was to create a school and music magazine, and in A2, one of the tasks was to create a film magazine (plus I also used Publisher for my film poster & the third task is to do a teaser trailer but is unrelated to Publisher). And this was easy to do, as I already knew the program and although conventions/forms are slightly different on film magazines opposed to music, they are similar, for example: they both feature barcodes. Through doing all this coursework I have skills in applying conventions/forms of existing products onto my original creations.

My skills have developed over the course because I have learnt about and how to use Windows Movie Maker which I have never used before doing the A2 coursework of creating a teaser trailer (as a group- but I did the editing). I have learnt how to cut down footage and split it into pieces. I have also learnt how to insert pictures and text, how to add special effects, sound, etc…
